Since I’m a dating app user, I’m usually told to use Social Catfish to cross-check my match’s photos, but I (and others) rarely have any luck with it.
So, I did an experiment: are there better reverse photo lookup alternatives? Absolutely! But first, this is what you need to know about Social Catfish:
Do Users Think Social Catfish Is Worth It for Image Searching?
The most common complaint about Social Catfish is “shady” billing practices – users report agreeing to the $1.99 fee, then later being charged 25-40 bucks.

And I do agree that Social Catfish’s photo lookup feature is very lackluster because it usually doesn’t find crucial info, like identity and source links.
Social Catfish’s face recognition isn’t the best, so the info it does find isn’t always accurate – mostly visually similar images instead of exact matches.
To recap, if you’re looking for a quick, accurate reverse photo search without breaking the bank, skip Social Catfish because there are better options!
I have found that these 8 alternatives are more transparent (in terms of pricing and customer service) and better at reverse image searching:

CatfishLens is a face recognition tool, and the best Social Catfish alternative for identifying faces appearing on:
- Social media (TikTok, Twitter, Snapchat, etc.)
- Dating apps (Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, and more)
- Professional sites, such as LinkedIn, and news outlets
While Social Catfish is a broad background-check tool, CatfishLens is built for accurate face analysis, even in edited, cropped, and AI-generated photos.
CatfishLens results will return pieces of public digital footprints, such as names, related images, and links where the image appears online.
With its built-in risk-score system, CatfishLens lets you know if the photo is being mass-used, is tied to suspicious people, or has inconsistencies.
I usually use CatfishLens to identify people I meet online because it excels at catching catfishes without forcing a monthly subscription.

You can even use CatfishLens to see if your photos have been stolen, but overall, it’s faster, more accurate, and less pricey than Social Catfish.
2. TinEye: Best for Basic, Free Photo Lookups
TinEye is a grátis reverse image search tool, and a great Social Catfish stand-in for reverse searching famous faces and objects (clothes, bags, books, etc.).
That’s right – TinEye works better for identifying items and popular faces than random people, but it has features Social Catfish doesn’t…
- API access (starting at $200, up to $10k)
- Image tracking (track where your images are being used)
- Extensions for your browser
- Advanced filters to sort results by image size, edit, and match strength
- Stock photo identification, even from pages that no longer exist
Compared to Social Catfish, TinEye doesn’t specialize in face recognition, so it may not help with finding details like names, age, and identity.
It has an index of over 80 billion images (and counting!), so I’d recommend TinEye over Social Catfish because it’s cheaper and better suited for high-volume photo lookups.
3. Google, Bing, and Yandex: Best Reverse Photo Search Engine
Some big search engines have a reverse photo lookup feature that’s decent, but not on par with Social Catfish’s face recognition technology.
Google Images, Yandex, e Bing Images are most effective at finding information on images of celebrities, public figures, and viral content.
Google Lens has a large database of images, and when you upload a photo (via the camera icon), the results will reveal the name and other public details.
Bing Visual Search is similar to Google, but its part-by-part image analysis is better – I use it whenever I need to look up only one item within a photo.
These two search engines have extra features, such as image-based translation and math problem-solving.
Yandex (or Yandex.ru), however, is my favorite one for quick, casual image searches because it returns more results than Social Catfish; it’s slightly better at face matching than Google and Bing.
Honestly? If you need a free way to look up a selfie or image of an item, any of these three search engines would do for low-stakes reverse image searching.
4. ProFaceFinder: Best at Reverse Face Matching
ProFaceFinder is a face recognition search engine that finds exact face matches – no guesswork, like on Social Catfish.
It scans billions of public photos online (on social media, dating apps, news sites, and so on) to help you identify the person’s face.
ProFaceFinder effectively handles AI-generated, cropped, or edited photos because it’s não a general people-search tool like Social Catfish is!
The safety features let you see if a photo is suspicious or not, but you’re going to have to connect the dots yourself!
- Identify the original owner of the photo
- Detect image mass use
- Find criminal mugshots (if available)
- See if the photo has been reused or altered in any way
- Reveal background clues like locations
I find ProFaceFinder’s pricing much more convenient than Social Catfish’s because you can pay $8-$12 for 2 or 5 photo lookups.
Perfect for occasional reverse photo lookups!
5. FaceCheck.ID: Best for Identification & Mugshots
FaceCheck.ID is a face analysis engine that’s more effective than Social Catfish for identifying faces and resurfacing public criminal records.
That’s right! Other than social media and dating apps, FaceCheck.ID is most people’s go-to for matching faces in mugshots, news, e crime-related sites.
However, it doesn’t work for images of objects. FaceCheck.ID accepts payment in the form of crypto only, but the plans are cheaper with fewer searches.

I always opt for the $20 plan when I need to reverse search selfies right then and there because the credits expire in 2 weeks, depending on the plan.
Otherwise, if you’re an employer who does background checks or someone who needs to routinely reverse search photos, I recommend the other plans!
6. PimEyes: Best for Deep-Dive Photo Lookups
PimEyes is a popular reverse face search tool used for deep investigations, particularly to find tricky details that the Social Catfish photo lookup feature misses.
Similar to FaceCheck.ID, PimEyes also surfaces public criminal information if the face you look up can be matched to a mugshot or a news report.
And on the other hand, it works just as well (if not better) as Social Catfish at finding face matches across public platforms, social media, and dating sites.
The PimEyes plans are slightly cheaper and more convenient for daily searches than the ones on Social Catfish – you even get 10 free daily searches!

Now, I don’t use PimEyes unless I’m doing intensive reverse photo lookups because it’s pricey, but it’s better than Social Catfish for monthly/annual use.
7. Lenso.ai: Best for Comprehensive Photo Lookup Reports
Lenso.ai is a tool that can be used for both face search and reverse image search via face recognition technology and CBIR (content-based image retrieval).
Its photo lookup function has better features than Social Catfish’s because it claims to produce 10x more results and better accessibility.
- Sort results by categories: duplicates, places, and similar photos.
- Identify the faces appearing in photos, from worst to best matches.
- Access Lenso.ai’s API (a separate subscription).
- Use Research Mode to unlock more results.
- Unlock a Pixalytica report: an AI-based report that includes the ID, full name, age, and other details of the person in the photo.
Put simply, this tool is more versatile than Social Catfish’s face-search function because it can detect objects e faces.
The monthly subscriptions are more affordable than Social Catfish’s, depending on the use case: $17, $60, e $2.4k for 50, 500, or 5,000 searches.
Feel free to use Lenso.ai to find similar or exact photo matches, copyrighted materials, background checks, and copies.
8. Duplichecker: Best Image Copy Finder
And for the last entry on the list, we have DupliChecker, a tool that specializes in finding duplicates of photos for grátis ou paid.
Duplichecker is my secret tool for basic facial analysis because it’s more underrated than Social Catfish and the other alternatives I provided.
It’s not designed for powerful face recognition like Social Catfish is, but I like to use Duplichecker for locating image copies and their respective edits online.
Unlike Social Catfish, Duplichecker’s free version is actually free (no extra charges) for finding similar photos, though you can pay to unlock face matches.
